Catherine Marie O'Brien

May 3, 1940 — September 12, 2026

Boston, Massachusetts · Boston, Massachusetts

Catherine Marie O'Brien was born on May 3, 1940, the Feast of the Finding of the Holy Cross, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Patrick and Brigid O'Brien (née Callahan). She was baptized at Saint Patrick's Parish in South Boston three days later, and the Church was the compass of her life from that day forward. Catherine received her First Holy Communion at age seven and was confirmed at Saint Patrick's, taking the name Thérèse in honor of the Little Flower. She attended Saint Columbkille School and later Emmanuel College, where she earned a degree in education and met her husband, Francis Joseph Donovan, at a Newman Club dance in 1961. For forty-two years, Catherine taught second grade at Saint Gregory School in Dorchester, preparing hundreds of children for their First Communion with patience, warmth, and a gift for making the sacred feel close. She was a daily communicant, a member of the Rosary Society for fifty years, and an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion who brought the Eucharist to the homebound every Friday morning without fail. In her final years, Catherine's faith deepened rather than dimmed. She received the Anointing of the Sick with great peace, surrounded by her family and her pastor, Father Michael Shea. She entered eternal life on September 12, 2026, the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary. She was 86 years old.

"I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live." — John 11:25

How to use this template

This template honors a Catholic life through the lens of the Rite of Christian Burial. The Angel Wings theme reflects the Church's hope in the resurrection and the eternal mercy of God.

  1. 1

    Include the full baptismal name

Use the full baptismal name — including the saint's name if given at Confirmation, e.g., "Mary Catherine (St. Thérèse) O'Brien." This honors the full sacramental identity of the deceased.

  2. 2

    Describe the faith journey

Mention the parish where they were baptized, received First Communion, and were confirmed. Note any involvement in parish life — lector, extraordinary minister, rosary society, Knights of Columbus, or Catholic school service.

  3. 3

    List the Mass details

Include the full name of the parish, the street address, and the name of the celebrant if known. Note whether a Vigil (wake) service will be held the evening before.

  4. 4

    Add the Rite of Committal

If burial follows the Mass, include the cemetery name and address. Catholic cemeteries often have a brief Rite of Committal at the graveside — note this in the service details.

  5. 5

    Preview and print

The Angel Wings theme prints beautifully on cream or ivory cardstock. For a folded Mass card, print on 8.5×11 and fold in half. Many Catholic families include a prayer card insert — leave space for one.

Cultural note

Catholic obituaries traditionally include the phrase "entered eternal life" or "was called home to God" rather than simply "passed away." It is also customary to note the sacraments received — particularly Last Rites (Anointing of the Sick) — as a sign of the Church's care at the hour of death.

Print tip

Print on cream or ivory cardstock at 100% scale. The Angel Wings gradient prints best on a color printer. For a formal Mass program, use 80 lb. matte cardstock and fold in half.
