Danielle Marie Morgan was born on November 14, 1955, in Detroit, Michigan, to James and Gloria Morgan. She grew up on the east side of Detroit during a time of great change, and she watched her neighborhood absorb loss after loss — factories closing, families leaving, schools underfunded — and decided early that she was not going to leave and she was not going to stop fighting. Danielle earned a Bachelor of Social Work from Wayne State University in 1977 and a Master's in Public Administration in 1982. She spent the first decade of her career as a caseworker and supervisor at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, where she developed a reputation for cutting through bureaucracy on behalf of the families she served. In 1990, she left government work to become executive director of the East Detroit Community Development Corporation, a position she held for over twenty-five years. Under Danielle's leadership, the EDCDC developed over 400 units of affordable housing, launched a small business incubator that helped more than 150 entrepreneurs, established a youth workforce training program that placed over 600 young people in jobs, and secured more than $40 million in federal and state grants. She was a fixture at city council meetings, a trusted voice in conversations about neighborhood investment, and a person who could get a phone call returned by anyone in Detroit. She was also a mentor, a neighbor, a friend, and a woman who showed up. She coached youth basketball for fifteen years, organized the block club on her street for three decades, and never missed a neighborhood association meeting. She is survived by a community that is measurably better because she chose to stay. Danielle Marie Morgan passed away on July 28, 2026, at the age of 70. She changed things.
