Commander Patricia Anne Sullivan was born on September 17, 1958, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Thomas and Margaret Sullivan. She grew up in South Boston, the eldest of four children in a family where hard work and loyalty were not discussed but demonstrated daily. Patricia was the first in her family to attend a four-year university, and she chose the Naval Academy because she wanted to earn her place in the world on the hardest possible terms. She graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1980 with a degree in Systems Engineering, one of the first classes to include women as full midshipmen. She served for twenty-two years as a Surface Warfare Officer, commanding USS Gettysburg (CG-64) from 1998 to 2000 — one of the first women to command a U.S. Navy combatant ship. Her deployments included the Persian Gulf, the Mediterranean, and the Western Pacific. Commander Sullivan's decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), the Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy Achievement Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. She retired in 2002 and settled in Virginia Beach, where she had spent much of her career. In retirement, Patricia worked as a defense contractor and served as a mentor and advocate for women in the military through the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation. She was a tireless supporter of the USO Hampton Roads and volunteered regularly at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Hampton. She married Commander Robert Sullivan (ret.) in 1985, and together they raised two children who grew up understanding that service and sacrifice are not abstractions. Patricia Sullivan was a trailblazer who wore that distinction lightly and a mother who wore it with pride. Commander Patricia Anne Sullivan passed away on August 4, 2026, at the age of 67. Megan Sullivan, USN, of Norfolk, VA, and Brian Sullivan (Ashley) of Richmond, VA; three grandchildren; her siblings, Thomas Sullivan Jr. of Boston, MA, Kathleen Sullivan-Brady of Providence, RI, and Michael Sullivan of San Diego, CA.
