Tenzin Dorje Rinpoche was born on June 21, 1943, in Lhasa, Tibet, and recognized at the age of four as the reincarnation of a revered lama. He entered monastic training at Sera Monastery, where he studied Buddhist philosophy, logic, and meditation under some of the great teachers of his generation. His education was interrupted by the political upheaval of 1959, when he fled Tibet with thousands of other refugees, crossing the Himalayas on foot in winter. He spent the following years in Dharamsala, India, continuing his studies and eventually receiving his Geshe degree — the equivalent of a doctorate in Buddhist philosophy — from the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics. He was ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and spent two decades teaching at Tibetan monasteries in India and Nepal before accepting an invitation to establish a dharma center in the United States. In 1989, Tenzin Dorje founded Namgyal Dharma Center in Ithaca, New York, which grew under his guidance into a respected center for Tibetan Buddhist study and practice, attracting students from across North America and Europe. He taught with remarkable accessibility — making complex philosophical concepts understandable without diminishing their depth — and with a warmth and humor that made his students feel that wisdom was not distant but present, available in every moment. He was known for his patience with beginners, his rigor with advanced students, and his insistence that meditation practice must be grounded in ethics and compassion for others. He led annual retreats, wrote three books on Tibetan Buddhist practice, and mentored dozens of students who have gone on to teach in their own right. Tenzin Dorje Rinpoche passed into parinirvana on July 20, 2026, at the age of 83. His students continue his work.
