Mei Lin Chen

October 12, 1949August 6, 2026

Taipei, Taiwan · San Francisco, California

Mei Lin Chen was born on October 12, 1949, in Taipei, Taiwan, to Wei-Ming and Shu-Fen Chen. She grew up in a household where Buddhist practice was woven into the fabric of daily life — morning offerings, evening chanting, and the quiet understanding that every action carries consequence. Mei Lin absorbed these teachings naturally and spent her life embodying them. She immigrated to the United States in 1975, settling in San Francisco's Richmond District, where she built a life of quiet purpose. She worked as a licensed acupuncturist for over thirty years, treating patients with a combination of clinical skill and genuine compassion that kept many of them returning for decades. She believed that healing was not only physical, and she listened to her patients with the full attention that is the rarest of gifts. Mei Lin was a devoted practitioner at the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association in the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, where she participated in meditation retreats, volunteered in the kitchen during community meals, and helped translate dharma texts from Chinese to English. She took the Bodhisattva precepts in 1990 and lived them with consistency and grace. She raised her daughter, Lily, as a single mother after her husband's early death, working long hours while still finding time to cook elaborate Sunday dinners, tend her rooftop garden, and take long walks in Golden Gate Park. Her daughter describes a mother who was calm in every storm, who never raised her voice, and who taught by example that equanimity is not indifference — it is the deepest form of strength. Mei Lin Chen passed peacefully on August 6, 2026, at the age of 76. May she rest in the light of the dharma.

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul." — Psalm 23:1–3

How to use this template

This template honors a Buddhist practitioner whose life was defined by compassion, mindfulness, and service. The Peaceful Dove theme reflects the serenity of the dharma and the peace of a life well practiced.

  1. 1

Frame the life through Buddhist values

Buddhist obituaries are often framed around the values of compassion (karuna), loving-kindness (metta), and equanimity (upekkha). Describe how your loved one embodied these qualities in her daily life.

  2. 2

    Describe her practice specifically

Mention her meditation practice, her dharma center or monastery, her teacher, and any precepts she took. These details honor the depth of her commitment.

  3. 3

    Use Buddhist language naturally

Phrases like "passed into parinirvana," "returned to the dharma," or "continued her journey" are appropriate for Buddhist obituaries. Use the language that feels right for your family's tradition.

  4. 4

Include the dharma center or monastery

Include the name and address of the dharma center or monastery where the memorial service will be held. If the service includes chanting or meditation, note this in the service details.

  5. 5

    Close with a dharma phrase

End with a phrase that reflects the Buddhist understanding of death — "May she rest in the light of the dharma" or "May all beings be at peace." Choose language that resonates with your family's tradition.

Cultural note

Buddhist funeral customs vary significantly by tradition — Theravada, Mahayana, Tibetan, and Zen each have distinct practices. This template is designed to be adaptable to any Buddhist tradition. Consult with the dharma teacher or monastery for specific ritual guidance.

Print tip

The Peaceful Dove theme prints beautifully on white or light blue cardstock. Buddhist memorial services are often simple and contemplative — the program should reflect that same quality.
