Sora Kenji Nakamura was born on March 17, 1958, in Kyoto, Japan, to Kenji and Yoshiko Nakamura. Kyoto shaped Sora in ways that never left — the temples, the gardens, the particular quality of light in autumn, the understanding that beauty is not decoration but a form of truth. These sensibilities informed everything Sora made for the rest of their life. Sora studied fine arts at Kyoto City University of Arts before immigrating to the United States in 1984, eventually settling in Portland, Oregon, which offered a creative community and a landscape that resonated with their aesthetic. They earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 1988 and spent the next three decades as a working artist, ceramicist, and teacher. Sora's ceramic work — characterized by asymmetry, natural glazes, and a deep engagement with wabi-sabi aesthetics — was exhibited in galleries across the United States, Japan, and Europe. Their pieces are held in the permanent collections of the Portland Art Museum and the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. Sora taught ceramics at Portland Community College for twenty years, and their students describe a teacher who was exacting about craft and generous about vision. Sora was a longtime practitioner at the Great Vow Zen Monastery in Clatskanie, Oregon, where they participated in sesshins and contributed ceramic work to the monastery's meditation spaces. They found in Zen practice a natural complement to their artistic life — both demanded presence, both rewarded patience, both pointed toward something beyond the self. Sora Kenji Nakamura passed from this world on August 3, 2026, at the age of 68. Their work remains.
